IJH and the Faculty of Nursing at Universitas Indonesia (FIK UI) are preparing a pilot of Japanese-informed elderly care and rehabilitation. It is meant to give Indonesia the evidence a national standard needs: how older people are assessed, how their care is delivered, and how the results are measured over time.
The Challenge
Indonesia is aging fast. By 2045, more than 60 million Indonesians will be elderly, far more than current healthcare planning accounts for.
More than 80% of elderly Indonesians are cared for by family members with no professional training. This often leads to caregiver burnout and poorer health outcomes.
There are no unified rehabilitation protocols, caregiver certification, or quality standards for elderly day services, which leaves patients and families without clear guidance.
With fewer than four geriatric specialists per million people, the workforce gap is wide and growing. Closing it will require systemic reform, not incremental fixes.
The need is urgent for families and communities alike. Indonesia faces a serious gap in elderly care that calls for an integrated response.

Our Focus
IJH is building two programs: J-Riha for rehabilitation and J-Care for elderly care. Both aim to set a new standard of service in Indonesia, grounded in Japanese method and respect for the people in care.
J-Riha is designed to bring Japanese rehabilitation methods to Indonesian hospitals and homes, from recovery after surgery to stroke rehabilitation, with structured and measured care that helps people regain function and independence.
J-Care is designed to bring an integrated Japanese model of elderly care to Indonesian families: trained professional caregivers, home-visit nursing, and day services that treat older people with respect and skill.

IJH is the official Indonesia counterpart of 一般社団法人 Japan Indonesia Healthcare, a Japanese non-profit dedicated to healthcare exchange between the two countries. That relationship keeps our work grounded in a long-term institutional commitment rather than short-term opportunity.

Former Chairperson, Supervisory Board of BPJS Kesehatan (2022–2026)
Former Chairperson of the Supervisory Board of BPJS Kesehatan (2022–2026), one of the world's largest single-payer healthcare systems, and former Director General of Health Services at the Ministry of Health of Indonesia. A Professor at Universitas Hasanuddin and Hiroshima University Ph.D. graduate, he has led national healthcare policy, major referral hospitals, and medical education. He provides strategic oversight and institutional leadership to advance IJH's mission of strengthening healthcare collaboration between Indonesia and Japan.
